Q-RIDE unrestricted (R) MOTORCYCLE COURSE
The Q-Ride Unrestricted (R) course is a competency based training and assessment program whose objective is to reinforce riders’ knowledge and skills, and further develop higher order cognitive skills and risk management strategies. The course is designed for riders who have completed the Q-Ride Restricted (RE) course and have significant riding experience.
It is conducted mainly on-road with regular stops to provide coaching and discuss safe riding behaviours and strategies.
Half day (approx 3.5 hours)
$200 (own motorcycle)
$250 (motorcycle supplied)
WHAT TO BRING
Please bring along your safety gear-helmet, jacket, jeans, gloves, sunglasses and enclosed shoes. Helmet, jacket and gloves can also be provided for you at no additional cost.
Students need to complete the Open Motorcycle Licence course to be eligible to upgrade from a Restricted Motorcycle Licence (RE) to an Unrestricted Motorcycle Licence (R).
You must complete this course on an R class bike, not a LAMS bike.
what to expect
Completion of this course will ensure that you have the knowledge, skills and confidence to manage riding situations independently, to reinforce good riding attitudes and to minimise the likelihood of harm that may be attributed to inadequate knowledge, skills or risk management.
You will complete a simulated road ride where you will need to demonstrate a range of skills and habits
Roundabouts – turning at low speed with control
Slow ride – controlling the motorcycle at a slow walking pace
Swerve – avoiding an obstacle in a corner
Stop to a point – stopping quickly and smoothly with full control
You will also complete a 2 hour road ride where you are assessed for competency in the aspects of managing routine and more complex riding situations on a more powerful motorcycle, to reinforce appropriate riding attitudes and to minimise the likelihood of harm that may be attributed to inappropriate riding skills, behaviours or risk management.
During the course you will need to demonstrate your competency on an R motorcycle. When you have been assessed as having acquired the required competencies, we will issue you with a competency declaration (Q-Ride certificate). Your competency declaration is not a licence.
When we notify the Department of Transport and Main Roads that you have successfully completed the course you can apply for your R licence online
If we do not notify the Department, you must take your competency declaration to a transport and motoring customer service centre to apply for your R licence. You will also need to bring your evidence of identity.
